The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is a non-university research institute in the field of the spatial sciences and a member of the Leibniz- Association. Our subject is the sustainable development and transformation of cities and regions in the context of the global human-ecological crisis.

Sustainable land use and spatial structure are of particular importance in this context. To answer the related questions, small-scale data, analyses, simulations, scenarios and assessments are needed for research purposes and to support decision-making in various contexts. Based on its established research data infrastructures "Monitor of Settlement and Open Space Development (IOER Monitor)” and "Information System Built Environment (ISBE)”, the IOER is establishing a Research Data Centre (IOER-RDC).

Job-specific background

With the recently launched Leibniz Labs (https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/forschung/leibniz-labs) the Leibniz Association aims to develop practical solutions to major societal challenges. In Leibniz Labs, a broad spectrum of Leibniz Institutes will work together in an inter- and transdisciplinary way. The focus is on complex questions such as: How can we preserve biodiversity and create resilient food systems in the face of the climate crisis? How can we better prepare for future pandemics? And how can historical experiences from fundamental upheavals and crises help to make our societies more resilient? To this end, the Labs involve stakeholders from society, politics and business. By tapping into the strong innovation and transfer potential of the community, they are intended to act as catalysts for societal transformation processes.

The Leibniz Labs Network accompanies the implementation of the three Leibniz Labs. Independent from the respective topics addressed, it focuses on the specific methodological approaches of and framework conditions for such major inter- and transdisciplinary research projects to tackle societal challenges. By organizing a structured exchange and transfer between the Labs as well as with the relevant sustainability science community, the Network will contribute to reflection and methodological learning during the implementation process. It will also develop an online toolkit for researchers to share insights and lessons learnt on designing, implementing and evaluating inter- and transdisciplinary research projects (e.g. co-design, co-production and co-evaluation). It will derive recommendations for future research and science policy based on the Leibniz-Lab approach.
